This Is Your TSO Chorus

Dr. Geoffrey Paul Boers
TSO Choral Director

Geoffrey Paul Boers has been director of the Tacoma Symphony Chorus since 2001. One of the region’s leading choral conductors and teachers, his choirs have performed at regional and national conventions of choral conductors and music educators, earning high praise for their expressivity and technical artistry. Recent conducting engagements have included Fanshawe’s African Sanctus at the Sydney Opera House, Mozart’s Requiem and Vespers at Carnegie Hall and a west-coast premier of a new work by Terry Riley with the world-renown Kronos Quartet. He has also conducted in London, England, Bangkok, Thailand, and the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts, and most recently concluded a teaching and conducting tour of mainland China.

In addition to his work with the Tacoma Symphony Chorus, Dr. Boers is the Director of Choral Studies at The University of Washington, Seattle, where he conducts the UW Chamber Singers, a choir of graduate and advanced singers, and teaches conducting and rehearsal techniques. In the past season the Chamber Singers performed for the National Convention of the American Musicological Society and took an extensive tour to the Baltic countries of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

Tacoma Symphony Chorus
The Tacoma Symphony Chorus was formed in 1998, making its critically acclaimed debut in performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra. In 1999, the chorus toured with conductor Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplande Orchestra for three Northwest performances. During TSO’s 2001-2002 season, the chorus displayed their tremendous technical mastery in back to back sold out performances of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. In May of 2003 the Tacoma Symphony Chorus and the Yakima Symphony Chorus joined forces for an evening of music entitled “It’s a Grand Night for Singing.” In the summer of 2003 members from both the Tacoma and Yakima Symphony reunited to travel to China, touring and performing from Beijing to Shanghai. This season the TSC will be presenting Handel’s Messiah in December and will again offer its popular solo spring concert.
