Symphonie Fantastique
Canada's prize-topping young cellist performs the most popular cello concert of all time. Born in Seoul, Korea, Soo Bae received her Bachelor of Music degree in 2001 from The Curtis Institute of Music and her Master's and Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School. She has been praised by The New Yorker as "superb," and was recognized in 2006 as First Prizewinner in the Canada Council of the Arts Instrument Bank competition. As part of this prize, she is currently performing on the 1696 Bonjour Stradivari cello. The Jerry Garcia of the 19th Century, Berlioz wrote Symphonie Fantastique as a musical journey through unrequited love, opium nightmares and witches' spells. Symphonie Fantastique is regarded by many as the pinnacle of tortured Romantic expression. Beethoven may have been grand, but Berlioz was... well, fantastic.
