 Program Overview

Haydn: The Creation

Inspired by the oratorios of Handel (composer of the famed Messiah), Franz Josef Haydn penned his masterpiece, The Creation, between 1796 and 1798.  Although the libretto stems from the Book of Genesis, 18th century oratorios were originally intended as entertainment rather than sacred works.  The 1798 premiere of The Creation in London was "the place to be": a sold-out, standing-room only affair of high society.  Today The Creation is regarded as the signature work of this contemporary (and teacher) of Mozart.
